Mistley Quay boat rally a huge success

The Mistley Quay boat rally held on Sunday 8 May was a great success and exceeded the expectations of Free the Quay. This is the rally in numbers:

500 happy people
200 hot dogs cooked
100 the age of the oldest boat
160 pints of beer
60 chicken burgers
60 mojitos
50 halloumi and mushroom burgers
50 boats, many dressed overall
40 Pimms
20 painted faces
10 hay bales for the performer’s stage
9 Golden Rivets and Naze Shanty Crew
8 the age of Thomas Davey, the youngest skipper who sailed his Optimist from Holbrook Creek
3 months – the age of the youngest crew member

It is heartening that even after 7 ½ years so many people are prepared to show publicly their opposition to the fence on the Quay. The huge success of this event is the clearest possible demonstration to Mr Parker, the owner of TWL of the extent of opposition to his behaviour and, in particular, his continuing refusal to agree to an acceptable and more effective form of barrier. Free the Quay have always offered to provide this barrier, approved by the conservation authorities at no expense to TWL.

Free the Quay is grateful to all those who attended the rally and support the cause. The fleet comprised yachts from Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Haven Ports Yacht Club, Shotley Point Yacht Club, Orwell Yacht Club, Stour Sailing Club and the Old Gaffers Association and many other local sailors and rivers users.

The High Court is due to hear later this year an application by TWL of the cancellation of the village green registration of Mistley Quay and all the money raised at the Rally will be used to meet the costs of this action.

THANK YOU ALL
